Pandachief Tips #3
Let's talk about strap lugs of black paint camera:
Leica M3 and M2 are considered full black paint cameras with almost all parts in black paint. (Of course early batch of budda ear M3 is probably the true full black paint camera, I will cover that later). Therefore, M3 and M2's strap lug are black paint on brass, and when the paint comes off (brassing), it will show a golden brass colour.
Leica M4 is considered semi black paint camera, while the body and many knobs are black paint, there's also many black chrome parts (such as shutter speed dial) and some silver chrome parts (Such as the plate under the shutter release button). The strap lug of over 99% of M4 black paint should be silver in colour. (Unless it is the ultra rare early first batch all black paint M4, but they are so rare that not many people know they exist. Not even shown in most Leica collector book, I believe rarer than budda ear BP M3).
Leica started to use strap lug from Leica III and the old Screw Mount BP Leica III do not have black paint strap lug.
But the collectible millartary BP IIIf and IIIG will have black paint strap lug that show brassing.
Reissue models such as MP3, M3J have budda ear black paint strap lug.
For those black paint M6s, it depends which special edition you are after. Some with black paint strap lug and some don't. I don't think there's any fake or repaint of these camera models out there so I will not cover in detail here.
One thing worth mentioning is M4 Black Chrome camera, they are a all black camera including the strap lug and many other areas that are silver on black paint M4. Actually, the earlier batch of black chrome M4 have black chrome strap lug will brass and show golden brassing instead of black on silver (later ones). I really love those cameras because most black chrome M4 will show silver after the black chrome wear off. |
