Leica M 246 Monochrome (YEAR 1). Thoughts and photo.

I have bought the Leica M246 Monochrome about 1 year ago.

It is actually quite an amazing camera. I uses it for travel, work and everyday life. Share some photos over the year first.

Lens mostly used was 35/1.4 Summilux ASPH 11874 + 18/4 Zeiss M

After i got the camera, the first trip i went was to tsing dao. It was just a trip with my parents (i try to do this once a year with them) and it was with a tour group. One of the new feature i loved about the M246 was live view. It allows me to shoot at different angle when i am using the 18mm along with zone focus.

As most already know, dynamic range on monochrome is excellent and high iso is also more than usable. It allows me to really focus on the shot and leave the rest behind.

I had the 18mm for a long while and it really came to live with the M246. shooting at f8 and zone focus most of the time and use the live view to capture angles i never really did before. Its a completely different experience.

The M246 is also great for family photos. The type of tone and atmosphere it sets is completely different.
It reminds me shooting with the digital M the first time (mine was m8.2) and looking at that crappy LCD yet so amazed by the image.
But sometimes will be great to have colour photos.

here again. great dynamic range allows me to pull out details in the dark and in the over blown areas.

I also have the M246 with me when i go to work indoor and outdoor. Its high ISO allows me to capture really nice and smooth images even when just the modelling light is available.

I would love to have one day and do a proper studio shoot with just the monochrome.

This is my second time shooting the Tai Hang Fire dragon. My first time using the M246 to shoot it. I have to say, its much lighter than carrying a DSLR and I can run so much more. Also the High ISO handled it very well. The smaller compressed file here doesnt serve it justice

Then i took a trip to Kaohsiung and had a good one to one with the M246. It really sang for me. Shooting with it is definitely a different experience from shooting with the M9 before.

I used to convert M9 photos into black and white. Shooting in true black and white is something totally different. I makes you think about patterns, forms, lights quite a bit more.

Color is nice too but sometimes they take certain things away. I will keep the S for colors.

The next part is i took the M246 on a short weekend trip to somewhere close by in China.
Again a super rush tour group.

In this trip we went on underwater cave as seen in the photos. They turned out quite well. Most DSLR and phone failed completely in this area. I will say the Monochrome did ok.

Another things i tried is to really shoot scenic with the monochrome and experiment with it. I don't have a tripod for this trip. Planning to get a tiny one soon.

Back in Hong Kong and does what M does best. Time for a bit of street photo. we all know the benefit of M, no need to talk about here.
One thing about the M that bothers me is the starting ISO is at 320 which in sunny day is quite a pain. All those luxs and crons had to stop down.

As i mentioned earlier that i am trying to shoot landscape with the M246. This time i grabbed out my Filter set that i usually use on my S2 and gave it a good try. I think it worked quite well. The only annoying things with the M design is the plate screw for tripod goes all the way in. So you can not have the plate constantly in place and want to change card or battery at times.
