Thx edwardyung c-hing for your constructive comment!  I am much obliged!

Yes, I cropped using diff ...

Thanks edwardyung c-hing for your sharing!

I don't crop when I am lucky!  To be honest, on average I crop 10-20% of the areas of my images, sometimes more.

The main reasons for my cropping are:

1.  Allowance for the imprecision of rangefinder framing.
2.  Rotational crop due to tilted axis or horizon.
3.  Change of aspect ratio.
4.  Finetuning of subject position.

I crop more when:

5.  I try to salvage a botched photo, but it usually doesn't work (as pointed out by HCB).

(cont.)

The following reasons restrain me from excessive cropping:

1.  Preservation of the composition when the photo was taken;

2.  Sensor resolution: M9/MM have 18MP sensors only. Unlike digital backs, cropping may result in the pic having too few pixels!

3.  Focal length perspective: It's impossible to use, say, a 35mm lens like a 75mm lens after croppng. The perspectives are different.

In portraits, teles result in compressed facial features (suitable for half-bodies and close-ups), whereas wideangles result in exaggerated facial features (suitable for whole bodies, especially 28mm and 35mm).  My humble pics in this thread may illustrate my point.  That's why I stitched the panoramas for the children shots for the special effect (flattened look) rather than using a wideangle for single shots.

When I stand far away I have no choice but to use teles for whole bodies, but as you see the results are sometimes not ideal.  They're ok for live record purposes but fall short of the portraiture standard (which reminds me of Capa: if your pic is not good enough you're not close enough.)

The perspective of 50mm is almost eye-like but is difficult to employ in the field.  (Where do I stand?)  I totally understand why 50mm was HCB's all-time favorite!

This also explains why I generally dislike zooms because when using them I tend to lose control over this rather important aspect of photography.
