Nowadays, in HK it doesn't cost very much to get hold of a 2nd hand M8 (or M9).
The main problem with M9 (and to a certain extent M8) is corrosion of the IR block glass filter in front of the sensor.
If the IR block glass filter is removed, in fact the sensor will suffer no more corrosion. However, it is obvious that the removal is a professional job.
After removal of the IR block glass filter, the sensor will be able to detect infrared up to its native frequency (which I need to look up).
UV should not be a problem coz most UV filters are generally very effective in blocking UV (insofar as it doesn't interfere with IR at the same time).
I have no idea how the Kodak CCD sensor with IR block glass filter removed would perform with or without infrared filters mounted on the lens.
If someone is (1) truly and deeply into infrared photography; (2) able to find a suitable technician (maybe Leica Germany itself) to perform the IR block glass filter removal without damaging the sensor; and (3) able to afford the 2nd hand camera and removal procedure without too much fuss, then it might be an adventure well worth undertaking.
No one knows the outcome, but doesn't it sound like risk worth taking? The outcome may defy all expectations... |
