Public housing in Ilulissat, Greenland
Public housing in Greenland is mostly inhabited by Inuits, the aboriginal people who had originally inhabited in Greenland before colonization by Denmark.
Traditionally, Inuits were hunters-fishermen-gatherers who lived in small settlements such as outposts or villages in igloos (ice houses) in the winter and huts made of animal skins in the summer.
As modernisation and urbanisation took place, the Danish-controlled administration resettled most Inuits into public housing such the ones shown in the picture.
Once living inside public housing, the Inuits gradually lost their intimate connection with nature and their traditional role and skills as hunters-fishermen-gatherers. Unemployment became high and social problems became widespread. A lot of Inuits suffered from psychological issues due to maladjustment to modern city life and went on to develop problems such as alcohol and substance abuse.
The Greenlandic government is keenly aware of these issues but remains unable to solve them entirely.
