I believe a minority of them are initially contented with, or feel sort of peacefully nested into this way of living.

I am sure your photographic eyes can dig out both sides of this issue.

In my point of view, it's our "judgement" of the norm that categorize them as the poor and sad.  But who knows, may be they feel sad for us who have to rush to work and stay in the office for 12 hours a day, while they have freedom.

Exactly. While most would focus (thus shoot from that angle) on how sad, poor or helpless living by public area, there might be moments that they do feel happy, be it only a glimse.

Being contented within despair...
Lonely but fulfilled...
